FAQ: Prynt: the first instant camera case for iPhone and Android
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What is Prynt?

Prynt is the first ever instant camera case for smartphones. Just plug in your device, take a picture, and voila: get a beautiful printed photo in your hands within seconds. Our case is simple — no ink, wifi or bluetooth — and is compatible with iOS and Android phones. Plus, when you take a photo with Prynt, our app embeds a video inside of it, giving you a creative new way to tell your story. Hold your phone over any printed picture and watch it come to life in augmented reality on screen! Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

How is it different than a printer?

A printer is an additional device to carry, switch on as needed, and navigate through a menu of complex options before you get a single print. With Prynt, just put your phone in the case and the app opens automatically; then snap a picture and swipe to print! It’s so easy to use and is truly portable. How can I change or add to my pledge?

  1. Click on the ‘Manage My Pledge’ button you see at the top right (when signed in) on the project page. 2. Adjust your pledge and follow the on-screen instructions. 3. Please send us a private message to confirm your change. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

How do I add shipping?

Simply choose your perk and note the shipping costs outlined in the description. Next add your perk cost + additional paper add-ons ($25 for 50 sheets) + shipping costs to get your total. Enter your total in the “pledge amount” in the checkout page before validating. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 6:41 pm EST

What if I forgot to add shipping?

If you forgot to add shipping, or pledged the wrong amount, our software will easily identify this once the campaign is finished. You will be emailed after the campaign is over to reconcile any errors, and you’ll still be able to get the perk you validated. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 6:41 pm EST

How exactly does the technology work?

We decided to build Prynt based on thermal technology as it does not require ink, which makes the process really simple for the user, and kept the device small. There are no cartridges to change, only our photo paper, which actually has the ink embedded inside of it. When it’s heated to the correct temperature, the image appears on the paper instantaneously and the quality is nearly archival. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

What is the price and what does it include?

Check out the different reward levels for pricing. Each case will come with one pack of paper and a mini-USB charger. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

Which phones does the Prynt Case work with?

Our case is currently compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5 as well as iPhone 5, 5C, 5S and 6. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

How exactly can Prynt be compatible with the different sizes of different smartphones? Do I have to manually adjust the case to fit it?

We designed Prynt to be modular, which makes it easy to change just the part of the case that connects directly with your phone. If our campaign is successfully funded, we’ll email you at the end with a survey to find out which adapter you’d like. And, if you upgrade or change your phone, you won’t need a whole new Prynt Case — just order a new adapter from us, follow our simple instructions to swap it out, and keep printing! Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

What if my phone isn’t supported?

We plan to add more compatibility in the future, so please let us know which device you’d like to buy a Prynt Case for! Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

Do I have to charge the Prynt Case?

Yes, it’s powered by an internal battery, which can be recharged with any mini-USB cable (we’ll include one with your reward). Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

How long does one charge last for?

You’ll be able to print around 20 photos on one charge. The Prynt Case has a lithium-ion two cell 500mAh battery. Thermal printing unfortunately requires a lot of power (so it’s more reliable to measure in prints than time) but Prynt should make it through most outings. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 2:17 pm EST

How much time does it take to get a complete charge?

Just 90 minutes, so plug it in when you’re getting ready in the morning or before your evening out and you’ll be all set. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

How long does it take to print a photo?

About thirty seconds. You can also choose to share or save your photo while it’s printing. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:02 am EST

Can I print photos from Instagram or that are already on my phone?

Yes! You can choose to print any photo on your device, or from Facebook and Instagram. Our app will also offer editing tools like filters and frames. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

What other social media platforms can I print from?

The app will only provide access to the photo feeds from Facebook and Instagram from now. If you want to print a picture from another app, you can still save it to your camera roll and select it in our app. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

How does the augmented reality feature actually work?

When a photo is taken, our app records a video and stores it in the cloud, linked to that photo. After it’s been printed, anyone with the Prynt app can hold their phone over the photo and watch the video. At that point, our app is scanning the content, much like a QR code, and then calling the video back from the cloud and playing it on screen. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Does the augmented reality feature work if the image has come from Facebook, Instagram or my camera roll?

Yes! We’ll have some surprises for you, so no matter where the photo comes from, you’ll get to experience the magic of our augmented reality feature. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Does Prynt work when I don’t have a network?

Prynt relies on a direct connection to your phone, so you don’t have to be online or on a mobile network to use it. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Will a software update on my smartphone affect the Prynt application?

No, although we will likely update our application as well whenever a major mobile software update occurs. All your data and preferences will remain. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

What are the dimensions of the Prynt Case?

Thickness: 1.18 in (30 mm); height: 3.15 in (80 mm); length: 5.04 in (128 mm). Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

How heavy is it?

Without a phone, the case weighs 0.49 pounds (225 g). We are still finalizing the exact weight based on production specifications but we have optimized the design it to make it as light as possible. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Will the color of the device be different than the ones on the Kickstarter page?

The main colors of our first edition cases are final. However, small changes in color may take place between now and delivery. We currently offer white, pink and blue models plus we’ve added a black case since reaching our first stretch goal. Last updated: Tue, Feb 17 2015 2:55 pm EST

Is that real leather on the Prynt Case?

No, we use a high-quality synthetic version that is animal-friendly. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

How do I get more paper? How much does it cost?

Each case comes with one or more packs (10 sheets of paper), and additional paper can be purchased through our app. Refill packs are $5 and include 10 sheets of paper. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Don’t I need film? What about ink cartridges for the printer?

The Prynt Case uses special ZINK (zero-ink) paper so you’ll never need to worry about film, ink or cartridges! Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Can I get extra paper for Prynt on Kickstarter with my reward?

Yes! We can include more paper if you “add on” to your pledge amount. Each additional $25 gets you 50 more sheets of paper. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

What size is the paper?

Our prints are two by three inches, which allows our device to stay small, but still produce beautiful pictures about the size of your smartphone’s screen. The prints are smudge-proof and water-resistant so don’t feel bad stashing them in your purse or pocket for safekeeping. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

How much paper does the case hold? How do I add more when it runs out?

The Prynt Case will take ten sheets of paper at a time. To add more, just remove your phone from the case, lift the panel underneath, and place the new paper in the well, blank slide up, then slide your phone back in. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

When will I get my Prynt Case after backing on Kickstarter?

We estimate that the first batch will be ready for delivery at the end of summer, with the rest following in early fall. Due to the very high number of backers, we cannot guarantee that orders will be shipped in the order they were received because different cases take different amounts of time to produce, and we want to ship them to you as soon as they are ready. Thanks for your patience and for joining us on our Kickstarter journey! Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Can I pay via PayPal?

No, at the moment Kickstarter uses their own payment processor. If you are having persistent problems checking out, please send us a private message and we’ll do our best to help you sort it out! Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

When will my card be charged?

You will only be charged if we are fully funded at the end of the campaign. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Do you accept returns?

Unfortunately we cannot accept returns from Kickstarter purchases. We will, however, repair or replace a defective unit at no cost. Thanks for your understanding. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

What is the planned retail price for Prynt?

Between $130 and $150, which also includes one pack of paper. We plan to begin retail orders in time for the 2015 holiday season. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

When do I give you my shipping information?

We will ask for your shipping information in a survey which is sent out after the Kickstarter campaign ends. We may send this survey closer to the time of shipping rather than immediately after the campaign to limit the chance of address changes. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

How much is shipping?

For the main pledge, US shipping is $10, Europe will be $15 and the rest of the world will be $20. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

I’m an international backer, do I have to worry about customs charges?

Customs fees vary depending on the country so we would recommend checking with your customs office before you become a backer. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

Can you indicate zero value when shipping to me? I would like to avoid high customs costs.

We’re sorry: the product must be valued as required by customs. Please check the import duty fees with your local customs office before ordering. Last updated: Tue, Jan 27 2015 9:16 am EST

I’m a distributor, how do I contact you?

We are accepting inquiries regarding future distribution opportunities via email at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest in Prynt! Last updated: Mon, Feb 9 2015 2:22 pm EST

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
